Why salt is dangerous for animals
Salt (sodium chloride) forms part of a normal diet in small quantities, but an overdose leads to sodium toxicity — also known as salt poisoning or hypernatraemia. In dogs, a relatively small amount can already cause clinical signs; higher doses can be fatal [2].
The mechanism is direct: a sharply elevated sodium level in the blood draws fluid out of brain cells. This causes dehydration of brain tissue and, in severe cases, cerebral oedema. Symptoms range from mild gastrointestinal complaints to convulsions and coma [2][3].
Sources of risk
Salt poisoning can occur via unexpected sources:
- Grit and ice-melting agents — widely used in winter; dogs walk through it and lick their paws
- Seawater — contains approximately 3.5% sodium chloride; dogs that swallow large amounts of seawater while swimming or playing on the beach run a real risk [2]
- Heavily salted snacks — crisps, pretzels, salted nuts
- Play dough (e.g. PlayDoh) — contains considerable amounts of salt and is therefore dangerous when dogs eat it
- Salt as an emetic — DANGEROUS and obsolete practice: the historical use of table salt to induce vomiting in dogs is life-threatening and must absolutely be avoided [2]
Cats are also vulnerable to salt poisoning. Specific toxicity thresholds for cats are less well documented, but similar sensitivity is assumed based on physiological similarities [2].
Symptoms by severity

Treatment: exclusively by a veterinary surgeon
If salt poisoning is suspected, immediate involvement of a veterinary surgeon is necessary. Home treatment is dangerous.
A crucial aspect of professional treatment is that the sodium level in the blood must be corrected slowly. Too rapid a reduction in sodium level paradoxically causes cerebral oedema and can also be fatal [1][3]. This makes salt poisoning a medically urgent condition requiring careful monitoring in a clinical setting — something that is not possible at home.
'Natural' does not mean safe
Salt is a completely natural substance, but this does not make it harmless. The assumption that something 'natural' is by definition safe explicitly does not apply here. Precisely the 'natural' tip to use salt as an emetic has cost dogs their lives.
Dogs that stay at the beach for long periods without access to fresh drinking water can develop mild hypernatraemia — even without dramatic symptoms, a check-up with a veterinary surgeon is advisable after prolonged contact with seawater [2].
Why this verdict?
The basis for grade B consists of a clinical case series, a standardised toxicology monograph (Merck Veterinary Manual) and a narrative review on hypernatraemia management. Controlled experimental studies in companion animals are largely lacking; toxicity thresholds are partly extrapolated from animal studies and clinical practice experience. For cats, the specific lethal dose has not been established separately.
