What is hypervitaminosis A?
Vitamin A is fat-soluble and is not excreted but stored in the liver and adipose tissue. In cats, an excess accumulates over months to years — without initial signs being visible. This makes chronic overdosage particularly dangerous: damage builds up silently while the cat appears healthy.
The practical cause is almost always the same: raw liver as a fixed part of the daily menu. Chicken liver contains roughly one hundred times the daily vitamin A requirement of a cat per 100 grams [1]. An occasional small portion of liver as a treat is acceptable; liver as a main meal is not.
What goes wrong in the body?
Skeletal damage
The most characteristic condition is the formation of bony outgrowths (exostoses and osteophytes) around the cervical and thoracic spine. These outgrowths can 'fuse' adjacent vertebrae together (ankylosis) and compress the spinal cord or nerve roots. The result: pain, progressive stiffness and ultimately paralysis of the forelimbs [1][3].
Blood levels above 630 µg/dl — whereas normal is 50–200 µg/dl — are associated with radiographically detectable skeletal abnormalities [1][3].
Liver damage
In addition to bone abnormalities, diffuse liver fibrosis has been documented in chronic intoxication [2]. Liver damage may be present without the cat appearing visibly ill. A controlled study with 24 cats showed that subtle skeletal changes and liver pathology occur already at one hundred times the normal vitamin A intake [1]. Based on these findings, the current safety limit of the NRC (2006) is considered too permissive.
Recovery and prognosis
Switching early to balanced commercial cat food can halt progression. Liver damage has some potential for recovery once the source of overdosage is removed. However, skeletal changes are largely irreversible; neurological damage due to spinal cord compression may be partially permanent [1][3].
What is safe?
There is no safe 'daily liver dose' — the safety margin is too narrow and too variable individually. What the literature does support: a maximum of one to two times per week a small portion of liver as a treat is generally accepted as non-problematic. Liver as a fixed component of the daily meal is irresponsible.
Vitamin A supplements (retinol) based on animal sources further increase the risk when the cat already receives a lot of liver. Never combine them with a liver-rich diet.
What to do if poisoning is suspected?
Go directly to the veterinary surgeon. There is no home treatment for hypervitaminosis A. The veterinary surgeon can arrange blood tests (retinol level, liver values) and X-rays of the spine to assess severity. Bring information about what the cat has eaten over the past months — including quantities and frequency of liver use.
'Natural' is not automatically safe: liver is a healthy foodstuff in small quantities, but in large quantities a documented cause of serious, partially irreversible injury [1][2][3].
Why this verdict?
Evidence grade A is based on a controlled animal study (24 cats, Corbee 2014), several published case series and a narrative literature review [1][2][3]. Findings are consistent: both skeletal pathology and liver fibrosis occur with chronic excessive liver use. Limitation: randomised clinical trials in cats are lacking, but the mechanistic and clinical evidence is strong enough for an A verdict.
Interactions with medication
- Vitamin A supplements (retinol): cumulative risk with concurrent liver use — accumulation accelerates
- Vitamin D supplements: combined toxicity of fat-soluble vitamins increases burden on liver and kidneys
