What are dental problems in rabbits and rodents?

Rabbit teeth grow throughout life (hypsodont/elodont). Normally they wear down through the grinding of roughage. When wear is insufficient, cheek teeth and incisors can overgrow and shift — a process referred to as Progressive Syndrome of Acquired Dental Disease (PSADD). The condition is progressive: once started, it cannot be fully reversed, only slowed [3].

In rodents (guinea pig, chinchilla, degu) a similar mechanism applies; in hamsters and rats the incisors are more central. Brachycephalic breeds (dwarf lop, Netherland dwarf) additionally have a congenital risk of incisor malocclusion due to skull morphology [3].

How big is the problem?

Dental problems are the most diagnosed condition in rabbits in first-line practice. What makes this difficult: approximately 42% of affected animals show no visible complaints at the time of diagnosis [2]. Age and male sex are independent risk factors [5].


What does the evidence say about prevention?

Hay: the strongest protective factor

Rabbits that receive hay as the main component of their diet (>80% of food intake) have approximately 68% lower risk of acquired dental disease than animals with little hay [2]. Free-range housing reduces the risk by approximately 43% [2]. Both factors are compatible: more movement goes hand in hand with more foraging behaviour and thus more chewing.

Muesli: clearly harmful

A randomised controlled study showed that muesli-based diets are associated with longer, more curved cheek teeth and clinical dental pathology — even when hay was offered simultaneously [1]. Muesli is not recommended as part of the rabbit diet.

No evidence for supplements or herbs

There is no clinical evidence that dietary supplements, herbal mixtures or other natural remedies prevent or treat dental disease in rabbits. This is not a gap in knowledge that justifies doubt; it is an investigated area from which no effect has emerged.


Diagnostics and treatment

Skull radiography is the standard diagnostic method. CT is superior for root problems: in a cohort of 90 rabbits, 63% had jaw abscesses, of which 79% also proved to have osteomyelitis — visible on CT but not on radiography [4]. This has direct consequences for treatment choice and prognosis.

Treatment consists of periodic correction of overgrowth or extraction of affected elements. Owners must understand that this slows progression but does not cure the condition [3]. Regular monitoring (at least annually, more frequently with known problems) is part of good management.


Supplement versus replacement

Dietary adjustments (hay-first, no muesli, sufficient space) are preventive measures with strong evidence and form the core of management. They do not replace veterinary assessment and are not a treatment for an existing condition. Once a rabbit shows symptoms, professional diagnostics are necessary — home management without diagnosis increases the risk of irreversible damage.

Why this verdict?

The assessment is based on a randomised controlled trial (Meredith 2015), a prospective cohort study (VetRecord 2024), a case series of 90 CT cases (Animals 2024) and a population study from clinical practice (Palma-Medel 2023). Together they cover aetiology, diagnostics and risk factors with consistent findings; the main limitation is that the RCT is limited to incisors and that long-term outcome data are lacking.
