What is spirulina?
Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis) is a blue-green microalga that occurs naturally in alkaline fresh water. It is cultivated for human and animal use and is rich in proteins, phycocyanin (a blue pigment with antioxidant properties), vitamin B12 analogues, iron and polyunsaturated fatty acids. In the human dietary supplement market, spirulina is widely available; interest in its use in companion animals is growing, but the scientific foundation lags far behind in this area.
What is claimed about it?
Popular claims include immunomodulation, support of gut health, anti-inflammatory effects and improvement of coat condition. In dogs, it is also sometimes used as performance support in sporting animals.
What does the evidence say?
Immune function and gut health in dogs
A study with 30 Husky-cross dogs that received spirulina for 42 weeks (0.2% of the ration) found a significantly higher vaccine response and higher faecal IgA levels than in the control group [1][3]. After exercise stress, the gut microbiota remained significantly more stable in the spirulina group compared with controls [3]. These are biologically plausible findings, but the study is small and cannot be directly translated into clinical recommendations.
Acceptance in dogs and cats
A palatability study in 60 dogs and 30 cats over six weeks showed that spirulina was well accepted and tolerated. Owners reported no negative health effects [2]. This indicates something about daily tolerability, but nothing about efficacy in specific disorders.
Limitations of the evidence
There are no controlled clinical studies in sick dogs or cats. There is no established therapeutic dosage for companion animals. The studies that are available concern healthy animals in a research setting [1][2][3]. Based on the current evidence, spirulina cannot be recommended as a treatment for a specific disease or complaint.
Safety and risks
This is the most critical part. Spirulina grown at uncontrolled locations can be contaminated with microcystins (hepatotoxic substances produced by cyanobacteria) and heavy metals such as arsenic, lead and mercury. In dogs, severe liver damage has been described after consumption of contaminated spirulina- or algae-related products.

Choose only products with an analytical quality certificate (COA) from the manufacturing company, showing that the product has been tested for microcystins and heavy metals. Request this certificate from the supplier before starting.
Use by the veterinary surgeon
If a veterinary surgeon considers spirulina as a dietary supplement — not as a treatment — this generally concerns healthy animals with the aim of immunomodulatory support. There is no clinically supported dosage. Always start low, introduce gradually and monitor for gastrointestinal reactions and signs of hepatotoxicity.
Do not give spirulina without veterinary consultation to animals with liver disorders, autoimmune diseases or animals using immunosuppressants.
Why this verdict?
The available evidence consists of one small dog study (n=30, 42 weeks) and a palatability study in dogs and cats — both with limited sample size and no controlled therapeutic application [1][2][3]. Randomised clinical trials in sick animals are lacking and no established therapeutic dosage exists, which justifies grade C.
Interactions with medication
- Immunosuppressants (such as ciclosporin or corticosteroids): spirulina has immunomodulatory effects; combination may disturb the balance — consult a veterinary surgeon
- Blood thinners: spirulina contains vitamin K analogues; theoretical interaction risk with anticoagulants
Legal status (Netherlands)
In the Netherlands, spirulina is freely available as a dietary supplement and feed additive. It is not registered as a veterinary medicinal product. Products fall under European feed legislation (Regulation (EC) No 767/2009); quality control is the manufacturer's responsibility.
