What is quercetin?

Quercetin is a flavonoid, a class of plant compounds that occurs naturally in onions, apples, blueberries and green tea. In supplement form, it is given to dogs and cats for its supposed anti-inflammatory and antihistamine-like effects in cases of itching and allergy.

Claims versus evidence

Online and in pet shops, quercetin is regularly circulated as 'natural Benadryl'. This comparison is marketing terminology, not a clinical conclusion.

What has been demonstrated in the laboratory: quercetin inhibits histamine release from mast cells in vitro, including from dog mast cells [1]. Mast cells play a central role in allergic reactions and itching, and this mechanism sounds promising. A narrative review on human immune responses confirms anti-allergic effects via multiple routes [2] — but none of these studies use live dogs or cats as test subjects.

What is missing: there are no published randomised clinical trials in dogs or cats that have investigated itching or allergy as a primary endpoint. All claims in companion animals are extrapolation. This is a fundamental limitation that must be stated honestly.

Absorption: a practical problem

Quercetin has poor bioavailability in most animal species — a large proportion is not absorbed into the bloodstream. Formulations intended to improve this, such as phytosome or liposomal variants, have hardly been studied in dogs and cats. Whether a supplement reaches the tissues where it should have an effect has not been established in companion animals.

For which complaints is it used?

Owners turn to quercetin for:

  • Seasonal itching (environmental allergy, pollen-related)
  • Food-related skin reactions
  • Atopic dermatitis in dogs

In cats, its use is rarer and the evidence base even thinner.

Safety

At normal doses, quercetin is considered safe in healthy adult dogs. The FDA has not approved quercetin as a veterinary medicinal product. In cats, higher doses have hardly been studied; extra caution is required here. In animals with kidney disease, long-term use of higher doses is discouraged until more data are available.

Diagnostics precede supplementation

Itching and allergic symptoms can have multiple causes: food intolerance, ectoparasites (fleas, mites), bacterial or fungal infection. Each of these causes requires a different approach. Supplementation without a diagnosis can unnecessarily delay the treatment of a readily treatable condition.

Why this verdict?

The available evidence consists exclusively of in vitro research on dog mast cells [1] and narrative reviews based on human studies [2]. Randomised clinical trials in dogs or cats with itching or allergy as the primary endpoint have not been published. Interactions with medication

  • Fluoroquinolone antibiotics (such as enrofloxacin, marbofloxacin): quercetin may inhibit the absorption of these agents; do not administer concurrently without consulting a veterinary surgeon
  • Anticoagulants and blood thinners: possible pharmacological interaction; increased caution required with concurrent use

Legal status (Netherlands)

In the Netherlands, quercetin is not registered as a veterinary medicinal product and falls under the category of dietary supplement. Sale with therapeutic claims for animals is not legally permitted without registration.
