Psyllium and fibre in animals (incl. sand colic horse)

What is psyllium?
Psyllium is the ground seed husk of Plantago ovata, rich in soluble fibres (mucilaginous polysaccharides). In contact with water, it forms a gel, causing the intestinal contents to increase in volume. This stimulates peristalsis and promotes the transit of material — including sand and indigestible particles — through the gastrointestinal tract [2].
Use in horses: sand colic
Sand colic occurs when sand accumulates in the large intestine, causing pain, inflammation and, in severe cases, intestinal obstruction. Psyllium is used both preventively and curatively.
Clinical treatment vs home administration
A retrospective study in 246 horses showed a large difference between administration routes [1]:
- Nasogastric intubation (clinical, psyllium + magnesium sulphate, 3–7 days): median residual sand area after treatment 6 cm²
- Home administration via feed: median residual sand area 103 cm²
This difference is clinically relevant. Home administration via feed is significantly less effective for clearing existing sand accumulations [1][2].
Combination with magnesium sulphate
Psyllium combined with magnesium sulphate performs better than psyllium alone [2][3]. Magnesium sulphate acts as an osmotic laxative and increases fluid volume in the intestine, loosening sand and facilitating its removal.
Preventive use
In sand-risk areas, it is common practice to give horses psyllium preventively for one week per month. However, randomised evidence for this regimen is lacking [2]. Whether preventive home administration actually prevents sand accumulation has not been well investigated.
Use in dogs
In dogs, psyllium is used as a safe soluble fibre for:
- Constipation — increases moisture content and volume of intestinal contents, promotes defecation
- Diarrhoea — gel formation slows transit and helps normalise consistency
Specific research on psyllium in dogs with sand ingestion or enteropathy is lacking. Its use is based on clinical practice and extrapolation from human and equine studies.
Safety
When used correctly and with sufficient water intake, psyllium is safe for dogs and horses. Points of attention:
- Always provide plenty of water — without sufficient fluid, the gel can actually cause obstruction
- Do not use in cases of suspected intestinal obstruction or acute colic without veterinary examination
- Extra caution is required in animals with swallowing difficulties
Dosage and form of administration always fall under veterinary supervision; especially in horses with existing sand accumulation, clinical treatment is preferable to home administration [1][3].
What this product is not
Psyllium is not a substitute for emergency veterinary treatment in colic. Home administration in a horse with active sand colic resolves the problem insufficiently in most cases [1][2]. Early contact with a veterinarian determines the outcome.

Why this verdict?
The evidence for psyllium in horses is based on retrospective case series and a narrative review [1][2][3] — no randomised controlled trials. The studies show consistent effects for clinical administration, but lack data for prevention and are limited to specific populations. In dogs, species-specific research on psyllium is virtually absent; its use is based on extrapolation and clinical experience.
Interactions with medication
- Magnesium sulphate (combination product in horses): acts synergistically, higher efficacy in sand colic [1][2]
- Concurrent use with oral medication: psyllium gel can delay absorption — do not administer simultaneously
Legal status (Netherlands)
Psyllium is freely available as a dietary supplement for animals; no specific veterinary registration requirement in the Netherlands. Veterinary supervision is required for the treatment of sand colic.
