What is propolis?

Propolis is a resinous mixture that bees collect from buds, bark and other plant parts, supplemented with beeswax and saliva. Bees use it to seal and protect the hive against micro-organisms. The active substances — flavonoids, phenolic acids and terpenes — vary strongly by geography, bee population and season [2]. This variability makes standardisation difficult and research results hard to compare.

Claims versus evidence

Wound healing (topical)

This is the best substantiated area of application in animals. An experimental study in dogs showed that a 30% propolis paste significantly accelerated wound healing: the wound surface area decreased measurably more after 14 and 21 days than in the control group [1]. Laboratory research confirms antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties of propolis extracts [2].

Caveat: this concerns one study with an experimental design. Independent replication and larger clinical trials in dogs or cats are lacking. It is therefore too early to consider propolis as a proven wound treatment in companion animals.

Immune support (systemic)

Animal experiments have shown that propolis can increase antibody production — among others against parvovirus in dogs. However, there are no clinical trials confirming this effect in healthy or sick companion animals [1][2]. Systemic use (oral or otherwise internal) also has no established veterinary dosage or safety threshold.

Other claims

Antifungal and antiviral effects of propolis have been described in the laboratory [2], but clinical evidence in dogs or cats is completely lacking. Claims about dental health, respiratory tract or gut flora in companion animals are not supported by species-specific research.

Safety

Allergic reaction is the primary concern. Animals with hypersensitivity to bee products (honey, beeswax) must not be given propolis. Always test topical applications first on a small skin area.

Cats and alcohol: many propolis extracts use ethanol as a solvent. Cats cannot break down alcohol — alcohol-containing extracts are absolutely contraindicated for oral use in cats.

Systemic dosage: safe internal doses for dogs and cats have not been established in controlled studies. Internal use only in consultation with a veterinary surgeon.

Quality and choice of product

Preferably choose a standardised extract with a known concentration of active substances. Check whether the product is alcohol-free when used in cats. Pure propolis products without added fragrances or preservatives are preferred in sensitive animals [2].

Summary

Propolis has biologically plausible properties and one promising wound healing study in dogs, but the clinical evidence in companion animals is too limited for firm recommendations. Topical application in dogs has the strongest — albeit still weak — substantiation. Always consult a veterinary surgeon for systemic use or in case of severe wounds.
