What are prebiotics?

Prebiotics are non-digestible dietary components that stimulate the growth or activity of beneficial gut bacteria. Well-known examples include fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS), inulin and mannanoligosaccharides (MOS). They serve as a food source for bacteria in the large intestine, after which fermentation takes place and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are produced [1][4].

How do prebiotics work in the gut?

Fermentable fibres increase the proportion of beneficial bacteria such as Bifidobacterium (in cats) and Megamonas (in dogs). The production of butyrate strengthens the gut barrier and inhibits local inflammatory processes [1][4]. Prebiotics are thus an indirect way to support the gut environment — they feed the bacteria, not the animal directly.

What does the evidence say?

Research shows that prebiotics measurably affect the gut flora in dogs and cats, but the response varies greatly per animal and is dose-dependent. Higher doses give more consistent effects, but also increase the risk of adverse effects [1].

A clinical study with a combination of prebiotics (baobab fruit pulp, acacia gum) and postbiotics showed improvement in stool consistency within 7 days and a significant decrease in flatulence in both dogs and cats after 28 days [2].

In dogs with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), histological improvement was found in a randomised controlled study when using prebiotics combined with chondroitin sulphate compared to placebo. The clinical difference did not reach statistical significance, likely due to the small group size [3].

There is no universally optimal prebiotic formulation. The choice of type, dose and formulation differs per species and per clinical condition [4].

When can prebiotics be useful?

Prebiotics are used as support for:

  • Mild digestive complaints — soft stools, variable bowel movements, mild flatulence
  • Recovery after antibiotic courses — to help restore the gut flora
  • Chronic enteropathy — as an adjuvant within a broader, multimodal treatment approach

Prebiotics are not a curative treatment for severe chronic enteropathy. They can be useful as an addition to medical care, not as a replacement for it.

Cats metabolise nutrition fundamentally differently than dogs. What works in dogs does not automatically work in cats. Always consult a veterinary surgeon for species-specific advice.

Practical considerations

  • Dosage is crucial: too little has no effect, too much causes temporary adverse effects [1]
  • Visible effect takes on average 7–28 days to appear [2]
  • Combination products (prebiotics + probiotics or postbiotics) are more frequently investigated in practice than prebiotics as a single ingredient
  • Always start low and build up slowly, preferably under the guidance of a veterinary surgeon

Why this verdict?

Clinical studies and an RCT show measurable effects on microbiome composition and stool quality, but sample sizes are small and studies often combine prebiotics with other interventions, making isolation of the effect difficult. Individual response varies greatly per animal and is dose-dependent. This justifies grade B: reasonable evidence for supportive use, insufficient for unambiguous recommendations as standalone treatment.
