What is overweight in rabbits and rodents?
Overweight occurs when energy intake is structurally higher than expenditure. In rabbits, guinea pigs and rats, this is assessed using the Body Condition Score (BCS), a scale from 1 to 5 where ribs, spine and pelvis are palpated. A BCS higher than 3 is considered overweight in rabbits [1].
Approximately 28% of pet rabbits and rats are overweight; in guinea pigs this figure is 23%. Notably: only 11 to 20% of owners recognise the problem [2]. Moreover, 58% of owners never received dietary advice from a veterinary surgeon — demonstrating that prevention and education can play a much larger role [2].
Risk factors
Six factors increase the risk of overweight [1][2]:
- Age — older animals move less and burn less energy
- Breed — some breeds are genetically more susceptible
- Sex and neutering — neutered animals have a significantly higher risk
- Diet — too many pellets, too little hay, snacks high in sugar or fat
- Housing — insufficient space to move
- Owner behaviour — unintentionally rewarding with calorie-dense food
Consequences
Overweight is not a cosmetic problem. Proven consequences include osteoarthritis, pododermatitis (painful inflammation of the foot sole), hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver), atherosclerosis, insulin resistance and an increased risk during anaesthesia [1]. In rats and hamsters, overweight also increases the chance of tumours and metabolic disorders [2].
What helps — and what does not?
Diet and nutrition (evidence: B)
The most substantiated approach is gradual adjustment of the diet [1][3]:
- Unlimited hay as the basis (80-90% of the diet in rabbits)
- Fewer pellets — at most a small daily portion
- Severely restrict snacks and sugar-containing vegetables (carrot, fruit)
- Fresh leafy greens as a supplement, not as main feed
Important: never suddenly reduce calorie intake drastically. An obese rabbit or rodent that suddenly stops eating — or refuses to eat due to overly strict restriction — runs a serious risk of hepatic lipidosis, which can be fatal within days [1].
Exercise and enrichment (evidence: B, indirect)
More space for movement reduces the risk of overweight. A spacious living area, tunnels, platforms and regular supervised free-run time support a healthy weight. Direct intervention studies are lacking, but this aligns with the identified risk factor 'housing' [2].
Supplements and herbal remedies (evidence: insufficient)
There is no scientific evidence that supplements, herbs or probiotics promote weight loss in rabbits or rodents. These products are not recommended as a treatment for overweight.
When to see a veterinary surgeon?
Have the weight determined by a veterinary surgeon or specialised veterinary nurse who can correctly assess the BCS. Together you will draw up a gradual weight loss plan suited to the specific species and age of the animal. Additional measures do not replace professional advice — especially not in an already obese animal with possible comorbidities.
Prevention
Start early: have young animals' weight checked, inform owners about correct nutrition and recognition of overweight. Few other preventive measures have as much impact as correct nutritional education [2].
Why this verdict?
Evidence grade B is based on narrative reviews and prevalence studies with standardised measurement methods (BCS), but randomised controlled trials in small pets are largely lacking [1][2][3]. The available literature is consistent regarding risk factors and consequences, but intervention studies are scarce.
