Omega-3 fatty acids — especially EPA and DHA from fish oil — are one of the few "natural" remedies for which good research actually exists in dogs with osteoarthritis. They inhibit inflammatory processes in the joint and can thus reduce pain and improve mobility.
What does the evidence show?
Two randomised, placebo-controlled multicentre trials in dogs with osteoarthritis showed that a diet enriched with fish oil improved mobility and — in one study — allowed the dose of anti-inflammatory drug (carprofen) to be reduced. A systematic review with meta-analysis from 2022 confirms that omega-3 belongs to the best-supported nutraceuticals for osteoarthritis.
✔ Important distinction
Good evidence for symptom relief (less pain, better movement) is something different from "cure". Osteoarthritis is a chronic, progressive condition. Omega-3 provides support; it does not restore cartilage.
EPA/DHA, not just "fish oil"
The active components are the long-chain fatty acids EPA and DHA. Plant sources (such as linseed oil) provide mainly ALA, which the dog converts only to a limited extent. For a therapeutic effect, sufficient EPA/DHA is required — the correct dosage should be determined by your veterinary surgeon, adjusted for weight and the rest of the ration.
Safety
Omega-3 is generally well tolerated. Points of attention:
- High doses can cause soft stools and affect blood clotting — report use before surgery.
- Pay attention to total calorie and fat intake, especially in dogs with overweight or a sensitive pancreas.
- Choose a quality product: fish oil can oxidise (become rancid) and contain traces of heavy metals.
⚠️ Not instead of diagnosis
Lameness has many causes (from cruciate ligament to infection to bone tumour). Have an animal that is limping first assessed by the veterinary surgeon; only then consider supplementation.
Why this verdict?
A systematic review with meta-analysis (2022) and two randomised, controlled multicentre trials in dogs with osteoarthritis (2010) consistently point in the same direction. Therefore 'strong evidence' (A) for symptom relief, with the caveat that effect size and optimal dose vary per animal.

- High doses of omega-3 can affect blood coagulation — relevant around surgeries or with blood thinners
