What are mites and fleas in rabbits and rodents?

Mites are microscopic arthropods that live in or on the skin. In rabbits and rodents, three species are most relevant:

  • Cheyletiella parasitovorax (fur mite) — causes white, movable scales above the shoulders and rump, also known as 'walking dandruff'. Diagnosis via tape preparation or skin scraping under the microscope.
  • Psoroptes cuniculi (ear mite) — nests in the ear canal and causes dark brown crusting; neglect can lead to otitis media.
  • Sarcoptes scabiei and Trixacarus caviae (in guinea pigs) — burrowing mites that cause severe itching and skin damage.

Fleas (in rabbits usually Spilopsyllus cuniculi) occur less frequently than mites, but require the same approach, including thorough environmental disinfection.

What does the evidence say about treatment?

Proven effective agents (veterinary, prescription-only)

Selamectin (spot-on) and ivermectin (subcutaneous or spot-on) have both proven effective against Cheyletiella infestation in rabbits [1] and Trixacarus caviae in guinea pigs [2]. In practice, selamectin is preferred due to simple administration and comparable efficacy [1][2]. For ear mites (Psoroptes cuniculi), ivermectin has also been investigated, with good results [3].

Important: all animals in a household that have had contact must be treated simultaneously.

Environmental disinfection

In case of fleas, treating the living environment is essential — larvae and eggs survive for months in bedding material, carpets and cracks. With mites alone, environmental sanitation is less critical, but cleaning the living space reduces reinfection.

There are no natural or supplementary agents with proven efficacy against mites or fleas in rabbits and rodents. Using agents with an unknown risk profile while the infestation persists leads to unnecessary delay and suffering.

Dangerous agents — never use

Fipronil (Frontline) is absolutely contraindicated in rabbits. Fatal neurotoxicity has been clinically documented; this also applies to agents based on fipronil in combination with other substances.

Permethrin in high concentrations is toxic to cats. In households with both rabbits and cats, only selamectin or ivermectin (without permethrin) should be used.

When to see a vet?

If mites or fleas are suspected, a veterinary consultation is always the appropriate step — not only for the correct diagnosis (species determines treatment), but also because the most effective agents are prescription-only. Self-treatment with over-the-counter products in these species regularly leads to serious adverse effects or inadequate treatment of the correct parasite.

Cheyletiella is zoonotic

Cheyletiella parasitovorax can temporarily transfer to humans and cause itching or skin rash in the owner. The infestation in humans usually resolves spontaneously once the animal has been treated, but it is a signal that treatment is urgent [1].

Why this verdict?

The evidence rests on a retrospective case series [1] and one RCT [2], supplemented by a narrative review [3]. Study populations are small and limited to a few mite species, but findings are consistent enough for grade B (moderate evidence).

Interactions with medication

  • Fipronil combined with other insecticides increases toxicity risk in rabbits
  • Permethrin-containing products are toxic to cats — do not use in mixed households
  • Tea tree oil combined with other topical agents: no evidence of efficacy, increased risk of skin toxicity in rabbits and rodents

Legal status (Netherlands)

In the Netherlands, selamectin and ivermectin are prescription-only; both are registered for use in small pets. Fipronil-containing products are not registered for rabbits.
