What is linseed (oil)?
Linseed is the seed of the flax plant (Linum usitatissimum) and the richest plant source of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), a short-chain omega-3 fatty acid. Linseed oil is obtained by cold pressing the seeds and contains 50–60% ALA. In human nutrition, ALA is considered a precursor for EPA and DHA — the long-chain omega-3 fatty acids that have anti-inflammatory effects.
Mechanism of action and the conversion issue
The essential fact for dogs and horses is that ALA is not efficiently converted to EPA or DHA. In carnivores and omnivores, the enzymatic conversion pathway (via elongases and desaturases) is limited. This is not theoretical: two randomised controlled studies in dogs confirm this.
In an RCT by Dominguez et al. (2021), the omega-3 index decreased in dogs given linseed oil, while EPA and DHA in the blood declined [1]. A second RCT in Alaskan Huskies (Lindqvist et al., 2023) directly compared linseed, krill oil and fish oil: krill oil increased the omega-3 index by 82%, fish oil by 42%, linseed gave no significant increase [2]. A systematic review from 2024 broadly confirms this pattern for carnivores and herbivores [3].
There are indications that ALA may act directly as an immunomodulator via G-protein-coupled receptors, independently of conversion to EPA/DHA. However, this mechanism has hardly been investigated in clinical trials in dogs and horses [3].
For which complaints and animal species?
Dog
- Skin and coat — linseed oil is traditionally used for dry skin and dull hair. Evidence is limited but improvement of the omega-6/omega-3 ratio is plausible.
- Inflammation — linseed oil is not an adequate replacement for fish oil when EPA/DHA is medically indicated (joint disorders, kidney disease, heart disease). In those cases, choose fish oil or krill oil.
Horse
- Coat, skin and condition — linseed and linseed oil are widely used in horses for shine and condition. Improvement of the dietary omega-6/omega-3 balance is plausible; a measurable increase in EPA/DHA in the blood is not to be expected [3].
- Gut health – whole linseed has a mucus-forming effect that is considered protective for the intestinal wall in some horses; clinical evidence is thin.

Raw whole linseeds contain cyanogenic glycosides (linamarin). At normal dietary amounts the risk is small, but at large amounts — particularly in horses — grinding or heating can break down the glycosides. Ground linseed and cold-pressed oil are the safe choice [3].
Excessive intake can cause laxative effects due to the high fibre content.
Interactions and precautions
Linseed oil can theoretically slightly affect blood clotting when used concurrently with anticoagulants (NSAIDs, heparin, warfarin). Clinical evidence for this in dogs and horses is limited, but caution with long-term combined use is reasonable.

Linseed (oil) is a safe, plant-based omega-3 source that can support coat and skin condition. Anyone wishing to supplement EPA or DHA — for joints, heart or kidneys — should choose fish or krill oil. Linseed is a supplement, not an equivalent [1][2][3].
Why this verdict?
Two RCTs in dogs (2021, 2023) consistently show that flaxseed supplementation does not significantly increase the omega-3 index and may even lower EPA/DHA, whereas fish and krill oil do. A systematic review (2024) confirms the limited ALA conversion in carnivores. Direct clinical trials in horses are lacking; evidence is primarily indirect via fatty acid profiles.
Interactions with medication
- Anticoagulants (NSAIDs, heparin, warfarin): theoretically additive effect on blood clotting at high doses of flaxseed oil — consult a veterinary surgeon regarding combined use
