Why are lilies so dangerous for cats?

Lilies from the genera Lilium (e.g. Easter lily, Tiger lily, Asiatic lily) and Hemerocallis (daylily) are exceptionally toxic to cats [1]. The exact toxin is still unknown, but the mechanism is well described: the substance causes severe necrosis of the renal tubules, leading to acute kidney insufficiency [1][4].

Crucial: all parts of the plant are dangerous — flowers, stamens, leaves, stem, root, pollen and the vase water. Even minimal exposure, such as licking pollen from the coat, can be fatal [1][2].

Cats are uniquely sensitive. In dogs, the same lilies cause only mild gastrointestinal complaints; in rodents, no effects have been reported [4].

Clinical course after ingestion

The disease course is predictable and rapid [1][3]:

  • 0–2 hours: vomiting, salivation, apathy
  • 2–12 hours: apparent improvement — do not wait, this is misleading
  • 12–30 hours: polyuric kidney insufficiency (large amounts of dilute urine)
  • 24–48 hours: anuric kidney insufficiency (urine production stops completely)
  • 3–7 days: death without treatment

Prognosis and treatment

The earlier treatment starts, the better the chance of survival. Intensive intravenous fluid therapy started within 18 hours after ingestion gives a good chance of survival [2][3]. If urine production has completely ceased (anuria), the prognosis is poor without dialysis [2].

A recent cohort study (JAVMA, 2025) confirms that cats treated as inpatients have significantly better outcomes than cats treated on an outpatient basis [3].

There is no antidote. Treatment is supportive: gastric lavage (if early), activated charcoal, and intensive fluid therapy.

What to do if ingestion is suspected

  1. Call the (emergency) veterinary surgeon immediately — do not wait for symptoms
  2. Take the plant or a photo for identification
  3. State the time of possible exposure as accurately as possible
  4. Do not induce vomiting yourself without consulting a veterinary surgeon

Prevention

Prevention is the only certain protection [1]:

  • Keep no lilies in the house where cats can access them — bouquets also pose a risk
  • Keep no lilies in the garden if cats roam freely outdoors
  • Warn visitors who bring flowers
  • Check bouquets from florists — not all sellers point out this risk

Why this verdict?

The toxicity of lilies in cats is documented in multiple cohort studies, case series and narrative reviews in peer-reviewed veterinary journals [1][2][3][4]. The clinical picture (renal tubular necrosis, predictable disease course) is consistent and reproducible. Limitation: the exact toxic toxin has not yet been identified; control studies in healthy cats have not been conducted for ethical reasons.

In the Netherlands, lilies are freely available as cut flowers and garden plants; no restrictions apply. Owners are themselves responsible for providing a safe living environment for their cat.
