Why cats form a separate category

Cats are not small dogs. Their liver lacks certain enzymes — specifically UDP-glucuronyltransferases — which are essential in other mammals for the breakdown of many compounds [4]. This makes cats exceptionally sensitive to substances that are completely safe for dogs or humans. This physiological fact is the starting point for every consideration regarding natural care, and it explains why safety data from other species is never directly transferable one-to-one.

Pitfalls per category

Essential oils: high risk

Essential oils constitute one of the most documented safety risks in cats. Phenols, terpenes and limonene are poorly or not metabolised in cats. Exposure — also via skin contact or inhalation from a diffuser — can cause liver and neurological damage [4]. Popular oils such as tea tree (melaleuca oil), eucalyptus, peppermint and clove fall explicitly under this category. Furthermore, cats lick their coat, meaning environmental exposure still results in oral ingestion.

CBD and cannabinoids: early stage

The first safety and pharmacokinetic studies in healthy cats are available [1][2]. The bioavailability in cats differs from that in dogs and humans, and the optimal dosage — let alone efficacy for specific conditions — has not been established. In research, sedation and gastrointestinal complaints were observed, among other things [1]. Use without veterinary supervision is premature.

Herbal preparations and supplements

In cats, the research basis for herbal medicine and supplements is even thinner than in dogs [3]. The fact that a product is "plant-based" offers no guarantee of safety in cats. Compounds such as salicylates (in willow bark), certain alkaloids and xylitol (sometimes in supplements) are toxic to cats.

Manual and physiotherapeutic therapies

Acupuncture, physiotherapy and massage techniques are less dependent on cat-specific metabolism. Nevertheless, controlled studies in cats are also scarce here [3]. Behavioural aspects play a larger role than in dogs: stress in cats is itself a clinically relevant variable that influences the outcome of every session.

Two questions that always precede

For every substance considered for a cat, two questions are leading:

  1. Is the safety data specific to cats? Or is it derived from other animal species and applied without verification?
  2. Is there an exposure risk beyond direct ingestion? Think of skin, inhalation and licking behaviour — not only what the cat eats directly.

Interactions with medication

  • CBD inhibits liver enzymes (CYP450) and can strengthen or prolong the effect of medicinal products broken down via the same route [1][2]
  • Essential oils can increase the toxicity of other liver-burdening substances in cats because liver breakdown capacity is already limited [4]

In the Netherlands, establishing a diagnosis and providing treatment advice for an animal is legally reserved to veterinary surgeons (Wet Dieren [Animals Act], art. 2.8). CBD products for animals are in a grey regulatory area: they are mostly sold as supplements but may not carry medical claims (Warenwet [Commodities Act], Diervoederwet [Animal Feed Act]).
