What is atopic dermatitis?

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition in which the immune system overreacts to allergens — environmental (pollen, house dust mites, moulds) or food-related. Pruritus (itching) is the primary symptom; recurrent skin infections, erythema (redness), scaling and excoriations (scratch wounds) are common consequences. The distinction between environmental AD and food-allergic skin reactions is clinically relevant and requires veterinary diagnostics — the two can occur simultaneously.

Diet as an adjunctive measure

Dietary interventions are the best-researched adjunctive domain for allergic skin conditions in dogs. Two mechanisms are distinguished.

Elimination diet for suspected food allergy

Where a food-related component is suspected, an elimination diet with hydrolysed protein or amino acid-based nutrition can be employed as both a diagnostic and therapeutic tool. Hydrolysed proteins are broken down into fragments that the immune system is less likely to recognise as allergens [2][3]. Narrative reviews show that both hydrolysed salmon and hydrolysed feather protein diets are used in restriction trial protocols in dogs with pruritus [2]. Amino acid-based diets — in which no intact protein chains are present — are considered the most hypoallergenic option [3].

Nutritional support of the skin barrier

Nutrients targeted at the skin barrier have a theoretical basis. The strongest direct RCT data currently come from feline research [1], where a dietary intervention contributed significantly to clinical improvement of atopic skin reactions. Direct extrapolation to dogs requires caution due to species-specific differences in metabolism and allergen reactivity.

Safety

Hydrolysed and amino acid diets are generally well tolerated [3]. Relevant points of attention:

  • Cross-reactivity: The degree of hydrolysis and the source material used partly determine the risk of a residual immune response — not every hydrolysed product is safe for every dog with a food allergy [2].
  • Nutritional completeness: An elimination diet is a diagnostic and therapeutic intervention; incorrect or prolonged use without supervision can lead to deficiencies.
  • Diagnostic obscuration: Concurrent use of other dietary supplements or treats during an elimination protocol makes interpretation more difficult.

What adjunctive measures do not replace

Dietary adjustments are not a replacement for veterinary diagnostics or medicinal treatment. Chronic atopic dermatitis in the dog is a recognised condition for which several registered veterinary treatments exist, including allergen-specific immunotherapy and biological therapies. The role of nutrition is adjunctive and supportive — not curative.
