Homeopathy is an 18th-century system based on "like cures like" and on extremely diluted remedies — often so highly diluted that statistically not a single molecule of the original substance remains. It is popular among some animal owners. But does it work?

What does the evidence say?

Homeopathy in animals is, contrary to what many people think, reasonably well researched. The most important independent analyses (a systematic review and meta-analysis of placebo-controlled trials, plus a review of trials with a control other than placebo) reach the same conclusion: there is no reliable, reproducible evidence that homeopathy in animals works better than placebo. The few positive studies proved to be methodologically weak (high risk of bias).

Myth: 'it is registered, so it works'

Homeopathic veterinary medicinal products may enter the market via a simplified registration without efficacy having to be demonstrated. A registration number therefore says nothing about whether the product works.

Why no "maybe"?

In addition to the lack of clinical effect, there is also no plausible mechanism of action: at the dilutions used, no active substance remains present. Scientific umbrella organisations (such as EASAC) and veterinary professional organisations (AVMA, RCVS) therefore conclude that homeopathy has no scientific basis.

The real risk: delay of care

The greatest danger of homeopathy is not the product itself (usually "merely" water or sugar pellets), but that a sick animal thereby misses effective treatment or receives it too late. In an animal that is in pain, not eating, short of breath or not recovering, delay is dangerous.

ℹ️ The placebo effect lies with the owner

Animals have no placebo expectation. Improvement reported by owners often results from the natural course of the complaint, concurrent conventional care, or the desire to see improvement. Therefore, blinded, controlled studies are precisely what is needed — and these show no effect.

Why this verdict?

A systematic review of placebo-controlled RCTs (2014) and the corresponding meta-analysis (2015) found no reliable, reproducible effect; the positive studies had a high risk of bias. A separate review of non-placebo-controlled trials also found no evidence. Scientific academies (EASAC) and professional organisations (AVMA, RCVS) conclude that a plausible mechanism of action is lacking. Hence the grade 'No evidence of efficacy'.

Homeopathic veterinary medicinal products have a separate (simplified) registration route without efficacy having to be demonstrated; registration therefore says nothing about effectiveness.
