What are boswellia and curcumin?

Boswellia serrata (frankincense resin) and curcumin (the active substance from turmeric) are plant-based compounds that are often used in combination in complementary veterinary medicine for dogs with joint complaints.

Boswellia inhibits specific enzymes (5-lipoxygenases) involved in the production of inflammatory mediators. Curcumin acts via multiple inflammatory pathways, including inhibition of NF-κB. Both substances are poorly water-soluble, meaning bioavailability strongly depends on the product formulation.


What are they used for in dogs?

The most commonly cited area of application is osteoarthritis (osteoarthritis, OA) — a chronic, progressive condition where cartilage breaks down and inflammation occurs in the joint. Typical complaints are pain, morning stiffness and reduced mobility, especially in older or large dogs.

Caterino et al. (2021) investigated the effect of a combination product containing curcumin and boswellic acids in dogs with osteoarthritis in an RCT [1]. The study found statistically significant improvements in pain score and mobility compared to the control group. As this concerns a registered randomised design, the quality of evidence is stronger than anecdotal or purely observational reports would justify.

The limitations are real: the population was relatively small and the substances were tested as a combined preparation — the individual active contribution of boswellia and curcumin cannot therefore be determined. Larger, independently replicated studies are currently lacking. The evidence is promising, but not definitive.


Safety and points of attention

Boswellia and curcumin are generally well tolerated by dogs at common supplement amounts. However, there are points of attention:

  • Gastrointestinal complaints occur incidentally at higher intakes: soft stools, nausea or reduced appetite.
  • Liver and kidney diseases: there is insufficient long-term data for dogs with existing organ problems; veterinary consultation is particularly indicated in those cases.
  • Formulation: not all products on the market are equivalent — bioavailability varies greatly per preparation and is not always stated on the label.
  • Individual variation: one dog reacts differently than another; always start gradually and monitor the dog for unwanted reactions.

Interactions with medication

  • NSAIDs (meloxicam, carprofen etc.): curcumin and boswellia have anti-inflammatory effects; combination may enhance effect but also increase risk of adverse effects — always discuss with a veterinary surgeon beforehand.
  • Anticoagulants: curcumin can inhibit platelet aggregation; combination requires extra caution in dogs using anticoagulants.
  • Acid suppressants: absorption of curcumin may be affected by agents that reduce gastric acid production.

Legal status (Netherlands)

Under Dutch law, making a diagnosis and giving treatment advice is legally reserved to veterinary surgeons (Wet Dieren, Article 2.8). Supplements containing boswellia or curcumin generally fall outside the Medicines Act as animal feed or dietary supplements, but may not make medical claims (Regulation (EC) No 767/2009).
